Working with Melissa and her team is incredible-not only are they are incredibly smart and effective business partners, but they are also fun and chic-what could be better? There are days when I swear they are really magicians as they seem to pull amazing things out of hats. I can’t imagine working with anyone else.
- Gretchen Hansen, CEO and Co-founder, Decorist
I’ve been working with Melissa Davis and the Ruby Press team since 2008 and their work is exceptional. Melissa was a long time Cost Plus World Market customer before we began working together so she knows the brand inside and out. With her editorial background with some of the biggest national fashion and lifestyle magazines, she offers great insight on what will resonate with editors. Each year, our PR value consistently outperforms the previous year by double digits.
- Jill Osaka, Pr Manager, Cost Plus World Market
As a member of the press since 2008, I've countless times been on the receiving end of Melissa's authentic, relationship-based approach to pitches. So when the time came to promote my book 'Sage Living', I knew exactly the thoughtful and effective outreach she'd be doing on my behalf. Yet working with Ruby Press exceeded even my highest expectations. Melissa and the Ruby Press crew handled my needs like I was their sole client; and they championed my book like it was their own. What's more, the quality and quantity of exposure they garnered for Sage Living had strangers approaching me to say, 'Your book is everywhere!" Melissa and her team aren't merely PR experts, they're invaluable partners in achieving success.
- Anne Sage, Blogger and Author of Sage Living: Decorate for the Life You Want
Melissa and the team at Ruby Press have been a tremendous asset to our company. We have been working with them since the inception of our company and together we have achieved outstanding results. Relentlessly imaginative, they have utilized their experience and relationships to help us gain valuable media placement and exposure. There is an ease when it comes to working with Ruby Press; we know it is because they are good people doing good work. We can’t give them enough accolades!
- Vicente Agor and Michael Pfeffer, Co-owners, Vicente Agor
Ruby Press thinks outside of the box. Always. As a non-box store we love this! The creativity and service level are unmatched and truly customized to our needs. And it’s obvious the media respects Melissa, her firm and her great team. Melissa and her staff are always attentive, creative and real workers!
Time and time again – I am amazed at what Ruby Press can accomplish. I swear, sometimes I feel like our PR firm is open 24/7. Being a small account, I think this is impressive. Like we strive to treat our customers – Ruby Press sets a standard.
- Nathan Waldon, Owner, Nathan & Co.
Ruby Press is the best! We chose them because we wanted a small agency that really cared about our business, and we were so pleased that we did. They gave us the personal service we wanted, the editors really trust them, and they’re a delight to work with. Win, win, win! And they threw in some amazing placements like GOOP, Sunset Magazine, Daily Candy, CasaSugar…the list goes on and on.
Ruby Press helped us launch our new shop with a splash, and now we’re positioned to be a successful, growing business. Thanks gals!
- Laurie Furber, Co-founder and Owner, Greenhouse Design Studio
We have had the pleasure of working with the team at Ruby Press for the past four years and it had been such a great partnership. Together, we have built our brand from a local phenomenon to a nationally recognized brand. Their innovative model is efficient and high impact…just what our growing business needs!
- Hillary Peterson, Founder/CEO, True Botanicals
Melissa and the Ruby Press team delivered on one of our PR dreams: a New York press tour that introduced our brand to some of the most prominent editors in the country. They worked closely with us to craft our messaging, represent our brand visually and offer editors a memorable experience with our retail model. We were highly impressed with their dedication to getting it right and thrilled to receive their notes and feedback directly from the editors. It was—without a doubt—one of the most exciting PR projects we have executed to date, and Ruby Press gets the credit for making it happen.
- Gina Nowicki, Senior Marketing Manager, Crossroads Trading/Fillmore & 5th
Melissa and her team designed a fantastic outreach plan for my cookbook campaign, targeting my wish list outlets (and so many more) with absolute efficiency, diplomacy, tremendous support, and class, no less! We were able to reach top lifestyle, design, and mommy bloggers and generate great excitement about my book and launch party. I was exposed to new audiences and gained social media followers, too. I’m thrilled to have worked with such a great team!
- Ruby Roth, Author of The Help Yourself Cookbook for Kids
Working with Melissa and the team at Ruby Press has been a very rewarding process. From the get go it was clear they had a strong understanding of our brand and how to present it to the press. Having never developed a line before, Melissa really helped us shape all of our collateral and had great suggestions on product.
The press they secured for us was very impactful, both in print and online. Their friendly relationships and ongoing dialogue with the top national outlets is impressive and gave us confidence in their ability to place our brand in the most sought after publications. Melissa and her team have consistently shown their excitement to work with us, their support for our project, and have easily made us feel at home and among family.
- Scott and Erica Hill, Owners and Founders Old Village Hall NYC
When my husband and I started developing our concept of our English tea salon we knew it would be completely different then any other tea salon in America. We also had an idea that it would be unique in the restaurant scene as well. Our vision was very clear to us, but how were we going to get everyone else to “get it”?
When we met with Melissa, when looking for a PR company, we showed her images, mood boards etc… it took about a second for her to “get it”! We knew she was our girl! From then on, we knew we were in for a fun time that would broaden our horizons in the crazy world of media. Investing in a PR company is imperative when starting up a new business but the investment can be scary. With Ruby Press it felt like we had our own Press Department. Ruby Press has other clients??? How could that be? Every phone call, every question, every request taken care of with out delay, hand holding all along the way. Amazing service is the bottom line with Melissa and her team. We could not be happier.
It is rare to find a charming, enthusiastic and clever girl like Melissa, that knows about anything and everything and everyone loves her for it, all because she doesn’t force it on you, she is subtle, cool and chic, you absolutely trust her and her taste. You can not go wrong with Ruby Press. Editors, bloggers, writers, clients… we all know who and what is the best: RUBY PRESS!!!! Hip Hip Hooray!
- Amy Dean, Co-owner and Co-founder of Crown & Crumpet
Wee Gallery started working with Melissa and her team at Ruby Press almost 2 years ago and it couldn’t have been more timely. Melissa and her team truly deliver a precisely tailored press experience, a far cry from the monthly press release. We have received the best press, and are constantly amazed by her team’s attention to detail. Melissa’s valuable experience, relationship with editors, and impeccable taste are invaluable when it comes to showing our products in their best light. You guys rock!
- Surya Sajnani, Co-owner and Co-founder of Wee Gallery
I’ve had the unique pleasure of working with Melissa as both a business owner and, before that, as a journalist. From both ends of the spectrum, Melissa and Ruby Press are amazing allies.
For a journalist, Melissa is a dream not only because of her professionalism, but-perhaps more importantly-because of her fabulous taste. You know that whatever she’s pitching truly is the best because she doesn’t waste her time with anything less. She’s like the girlfriend you crib your style notes from.
Having Melissa as your press agent is an incredible stamp of approval. When we started Plover Organic, we knew we had a special product but we weren’t able to get the word out there on our own. Hiring Melissa to launch our line was hands-down the best investment we made in our fledgling company. Good press is more than a perk-it has been the single most effective driver of sales for our company.
Melissa knows what she is doing and, beyond that, she is a fun, thoughtful, creative lady who we feel privileged to be working with. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we ever imagined launching Plover without Ruby Press!
- Marisa Kula Mercer, Co-owner and Co-founder of Plover Organic
Before I met Melissa, spending money on PR seemed like a “nice to have” rather than a “need to have.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. Working with Ruby Press turned out to be the single catalyst to our stratospheric success. Within one year of working with RP, we have doubled our web traffic, picked up dozens of new clients, and gotten on the radar of very important editors. Most importantly, Melissa is really fun and creative to work with. She totally understands our business and is a stylish and savvy spokesperson for our company. I also love that Melissa only represents and works with the best possible clients. It shows her high level of taste and integrity that editors trust. Thanks entirely to Ruby Press, Splendora has been in the press every single month since August 2004.
- Gina Pell, Ceo and Founder of Splendora
Ruby Press has been one of the best investments we’ve made towards the growth of our company. Through the years, we’ve come to rely on Melissa’s extensive knowledge and understanding of the cut-throat world of fashion and business, especially when developing our product lines.
Most importantly, however, is the we have absolute trust that the top priority at Ruby Press is to see the success of their clients.
- Ingrid Chen, CEO, Viv & Ingrid, Co.
Working with Ruby Press over the past 4 years has without a doubt made a significant impact on our sales. The consistent press coverage has established viv&ingrid as a recognized brand name among stores, allowing us to have a strong presence at trade shows and bring in new accounts. With increasing competition every year, having great press is just as important as having aMelissa and her team designed a fantastic outreach plan for my cookbook campaign, targeting my wish list outlets (and so many more) with absolute efficiency, diplomacy, tremendous support, and class, no less! We were able to reach top lifestyle, design, and mommy bloggers and generate great excitement about my book and launch party. I was exposed to new audiences and gained social media followers, too. I’m thrilled to have worked with such a great team! great product.
- Vivian Wang, VP of Sales, Viv & Ingrid Co.
Forget the old “press release and pray” approach to PR. For us, working with Melissa and Ruby Press means:
• Small firm service, big shop results
• Insider industry expertise and connections
• Product development consulting geared to maximize PR exposure
The bottom line is that within a few weeks of starting with Melissa and for the years since, we have been in “the right press” constantly and for us, the right press translates directly into improved sales to the right customer.
Ruby Press is a boutique shop, not a pr mill. We have always enjoyed extensive one-on-one service and have never felt that we had to compete for Melissa’s expertise. Without doubt, she has become a true partner, helping to refine our product line to ensure that it is as “press-worthy” as possible.
Rest assured, Melissa puts her clients’ needs first. A prime example is the care Melissa takes to ensure that all of her clients compliment, rather than compete with each other.
Melissa and Ruby Press has become an integral, essential part of iomoi’s continued growth and day-to-day operations.
- Matthew Grenby and Irene Chen, Owners, Iomoi/Parker Thatch
Working with Ruby Press has been one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made. From the day I signed on, Melissa and Cerise have given Dauphine Press their utmost attention and continue to make us feel like we are their only client.
Melissa’s success stems from her rare gift for cultivating professional relationships. She has a stellar reputation in the industry because she takes her work very seriously and has strong integrity when it comes to the companies she chooses to represent.
One of the benefits of working with Ruby Press is that Melissa partners with us to strategize our seasonal assortment. In turn, that helps us stay on target in developing timely product releases. Melissa’s amazing eye for color, design, style and trend, along with her New York trips, yield unparalleled editorial exposure, product placement, and feature articles in magazines that reach our target demographic.
After more than a year of working with Ruby Press, it’s evident that increased media exposure has further established our brand in the marketplace and helped to drive our sales beyond plan. In this sense, Ruby Press has been an integral partner in our business strategy, saving us time and money, and enabling me to place my focus elsewhere in the business.
- Trish Kinsella, President, Dauphine Press
I first met Melissa about two years ago when I opened my first shop, birch. We immediately had a connection. Last year when I struck out on my own and was thinking about how to go about starting up a business on my own, I thought of Melissa and sent her my portfolio to see if she might be interested in buying some flowers. Lucky for me, she wanted to represent me!!!
I knew that working out of a studio and not having a storefront would be a big obstacle to overcome. I wondered how I would get the word out to the public about my new venture. Not only did Melissa offer to represent me, she introduced me to an amazing web designer who took what I had created online and made it legit! And because of Melissa and Ruby Press, rosenow floral design has continually been in print and online, which has been amazing for business.
When I was first thinking about starting my own business, the thought never really crossed my mind to hire a PR rep. Now I don’t know what I would do without Melissa and Ruby Press. They have been so valuable in helping me launch my business and getting word of rosenow floral out into the world. I am so lucky that Melissa was willing to take a chance on rosenow floral, and she has been an absolute dream come true for me.
- Erin Rosenow, Owner, Rosenow Floral Design
Ruby Press began to represent Voilet.com shortly after out launch in early 2007, and the results for our business were immediate. The most influential magazine editors in the US are not only aware of Violet.com brand, but many have featured Violet.com in their pages. We are thrilled with the coverage we’ve received in our first year of working with Ruby Press–it’s created credibility for our new brand, and been a significant sales driver for our company.
It’s obvious that Melissa loves her work: she positively transmits energy, integrity, and enthusiasm. She’s excited about her clients –all of which are hand-picked after much consideration – and this shines through. We love being part of such a select group, and having Melissa represent us out in the world.
Melissa and her team are responsive, proactive, and are always available to discuss PR strategy and business issues; they make us feel as if Violet.com is their only client.
- Bonnie Cohen, Founder, Violet.com
Working with Melissa and her team was such a pleasure. Melissa is very savvy and business minded woman. Because she runs her own small business, she has true visions for her clients and what it takes to move to the next level. As an owner of a clothing store I was looking for some new ideas to re-vitalize my store. Melissa really knew how to approach the situtation and I appreciate her candor and thoughtfulness behind every idea. We had a soiree for the unveiling of dish home and the party could not have been more perfect. Her execution and focus to detail was what really impressed me. I would always recommend Melissa and her wonderful staff, they really know what they are doing!
- Desiree Alexander, Owner, Dish
If you’re looking for someone who thinks outside the box and has strong ties to bloggers and all forms of new media, look no further than Melissa Davis. Her energy and enthusiasm about the projects she takes is palpable, and she gets amazing results.
- Bridget Biscotti, Reclaim Home
Three words to describe Ruby Press: creative, savvy and hard working. Ruby Press has the best ideas. Ideas you just don’t normally see in the PR realm. Ideas the draw attention to your brand. They know to work the media landscape, whether it’s social media, online or traditional media. And while they might be small, they work big. Bottom line, they’ve gotten us a lot of attention, which in these media-saturated times, is no mean feat.
- Randy Brewer and Fred Whitefield, Owners, Convert and Convert Shoes
I've worked with Ruby Press for nearly a decade, both as an editor and as a client who the agency represented. Melissa Davis is innovative, genuine, whip-smart and--perhaps most importantly--everybody loves her. Editors want to publish her clients because they trust her taste and they like working with the Ruby Press team. They also know that Melissa has her finger on the pulse. She's capable of taking any brand to the next level, so I honestly couldn't recommend anybody more highly.
-Michelle Adams, Creative Consultant; Co-Founder, Lonny; Former Editor-in-Chief, Domino; Founder of Rubie Green
As a former designer and now a full time editor for HonestlyWTF, I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with Melissa as both a client and a colleague. After meeting her for the first time almost seven years ago, I immediately knew that her enthusiasm, charm, and commitment would be vital to the growth and success of my business. Melissa leads a fantastic team, who is equally as genuine and hard working as she is. I look forward to many more years of collaborations with my friends at Ruby Press!
- Erica Chan Coffman, Editor In Chief, Honestly…WTF
I often wish Ruby Press was the only PR firm I had to deal with. They only take on great clients so just by virtue of being repped by them I know a company has an interesting back story and a great product. They also pay attention to detail — in the several years I’ve been working with them, they have never once sent me a pitch about something I don’t cover. And they’re great at pitching in general — they know what makes a great story and, more importantly, what makes a great story for me. They’re helpful and super responsive when I’m in the midst of covering one of their clients; they follow up appropriately, but without pestering; and they promote the coverage once it’s come out. Plus they’re just a delightful group of people. In fact they are the only publicists who I will happily set aside an afternoon to meet with.
- Amy Westervelt, Freelance Writer, contributing regularly to the Wall Street Journal and The Guardian UK
I consider Melissa Davis a trusted friend and a true collaborator — I honestly couldn’t do my job without her help. She thinks like an editor but with the business acumen of someone who understands an emerging brand and what it takes to get them to the next level. She only works with clients she cares deeply for and believes in, which of course makes editors like me care about them and believe in them too. She has never steered me wrong; she knows exactly what would be a great fit for our audience and how to target that message accordingly. I admire her advocacy on behalf of her clients, coupled with a tastemaker’s unerring eye. To tell you the truth, I’d write about anything she told me to, because I know it would be great.
-Irene Edwards, Editor-in-Chief, Sunset
My favorite publicists to work with are those who, quite simply, make my life easier. And everyone at Ruby PR does exactly that. They offer that rare combination of professionalism and genuine warmth. Every person on the team is responsive and reliable, and that means I never have to worry about meeting my deadlines if I’m covering one of their clients. I find myself working with Ruby PR time and time again because they do have such a great roster—individuals and businesses that are stylish and just as wonderful to interact with as Melissa, Kate, and Genevieve are.
- Anh-Minh Le, Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief, Anthology Magazine
I love working with the Ruby Press team. They show such passion for all of their brands, and have a well curated group of companies. I always find new and exciting products through the team, and they are always a joy to work with!
- Rae Ann Herman, Contributing Style Editor, O Magazine
Ruby Press is not only a delight to work with, but a relief. They know how to anticipate requests and are extremely professional and efficient when handling them. We are always excited to stop by their press previews and see what’s new from their quirky and refreshing clients.
- Mimi Fawcett, Market Editor, Luxe Interiors + Design
Melissa Davis makes me smile. In an editorial world besieged by two rival PR camps: the aloof, too-cool-to-offer-any-assistance (besides checking your name off at a preview) on one side, and the super-hyper, garrulous, follow-up call to the minute-old emailed press release band to the other, Melissa stands apart. She is sweet, dearly loyal to her brands, and achingly well-spoken. You want to like her brands because she likes them; you DO like her brands because they’re all fantastic and unique. Like Melissa. She surrounds herself with a stellar team that willliterally work the day away to help you complete a story. Melissa Davis makes me smile. And whistle, “I wish they all could be California girls…”
- Mary Kate McGrath, Editor-in-Chief, Pure Wow
As a magazine contributor (Glamour, Conde Nast Traveler) and full-time blogger (A Cup of Jo), I’ve had the pleasure of working with Melissa and the Ruby Press team for the past four years. I adore their friendly emails, which never feel pushy, and we’ve truly become friends over the years, which was such a happy result. They have a roster of amazing clients and brands that are just begging to be written about, and whenever I’m scouting products for gift guides or editorial features, they always send a tailored list of great products that would be a perfect fit. I’m also addicted to their blog, which not only keeps me up to date on their clients, but also is pretty to read over breakfast every morning!
- Joanna Goddard, Blogger, A Cup of Jo, Contributor, Glamour, Conde Nast Traveler
Working with Melissa and her team at Ruby Press is such a pleasure. They are whip-smart, professional, incredibly quick on their feet, and of course, highly responsive to my needs as a journalist. I know I can trust Melissa to tell me about lines and products that have real integrity and that will add to whatever story I’m working on. And she’s got incredible taste! What’s not to love? I recommend Ruby Press wholeheartedly.
- Cristina Mueller, Freelance Writer, contributing regularly for Allure, Glamour, Vogue and Town & Country
Melissa and her team are like best friends you wish you had; they find you cool things, remember what you like and keep in touch. Their focus on personal relationships, on both sides of the PR coin, is what keeps them ahead of the pack. I work with plenty of PR companies and Ruby Press is one of the best.
- Miranda Jones, Style Editor, Sunset
As an editor, you can always count on Ruby Press to put brands in front of you that are not only gorgeous from a design standpoint but also relevant to your media outlet. I have known Melissa Davis for many years and love working with her and her team. I never miss one of their appointments.
- Treena Lombardo, Fashion Director, Allure
Melissa’s background as a fashion editor at some of the most prestigious fashion magazines in New York like Harper’s Bazaar and Mademoiselle is what sets her apart from the regular public relations companies out there. She understands what it means to get stylish product out quickly with no hassles. And she understands the details such as lookbooks, follow up and organizing press viewing days. Add a keen eye (as she was an editor and knows what we want), and working with Melissa and her team at Ruby Press is a joy!
- Alice Kim, Accessories Director, In Style
I love working with Melissa and her staff. They get the whole blogging scene and understand how to effectively communicate with the authors. Their low-key, personable style is refreshing and I always have fun working with them. Also, Melissa has flawless taste so I can trust her word when she says she’s found something fantastic!
- Chelsea Fuss, Owner/blogger (Frolic!) Blog
Melissa and I started our working relationship while she was an editor and I was in public relations. Melissa has such a wonderful and sophisticated eye for design, combined with an endearing personal character. Melissa is so professional, energetic and charismatic that it’s no wonder she now owns her own public relations company. At the time Melissa left New York and moved to the west coast to start her company, I switched my career to the editorial side, allowing Melissa and I to continue to have a close professional relationship which is now going on its eleventh year. I am in awe of Melissa and her accomplishments. She has done so well in the field of public relations – she’s such an inspiration to me. I would so highly recommend Melissa and her company to anyone interested in her services.
- Lynn Butler Beling, Freelance Stylist and Editor; Owner of Lynn Butler Design, Inc., The Product Gallery
I am always excited when Melissa and her team come to New York because it means I’m going to see gorgeous new introductions from lines that I’ve grown to love. And I never leave these press previews without discovering a new website, designer or boutique that I want to tell our readers about. Ruby Press is definitely my go-to source for indie, “best-kept-secret” material, exactly what our team of regional editors need to make their pages sparkle.
- Amy Elliott, Senior Editor, Brides Northern California & Brides Local Magazine
In a time of mass emails and random press kits, it is such a pleasure to work with Melissa and her group. They are true professionals and are selective about what they choose to represent. They understand our magazine and personalize their approach whenever they work with us. And, they meet tight deadlines and are great with the details – every editor’s dream!
- Andrea Borda Stanford, Design + Style Editor, C Magazine
Imagine if you will that you receive two party invitations. For purposes of clarity let’s refer to them as Party #1 and Party #2.
Party #1 – You arrive…a little late because the address wasn’t written accurately in the email. The door opens and it’s a fellow guest who instructs you that you can throw your coat wherever and find a drink in the kitchen. The hostess spots you from across the room and blurts out a “Heeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyy! while playing “Quarters” with a few guests that are scarcely maintaining a hold on consciousness. Over the blaring music she says she has some people she’d like you to meet. She drags you around the room, stopping to guffaw over some bad jokes, walking through a myriad of bagged snack foods that have temporarily replaced the flooring, then parades you through the kitchen where she does a shot while you search for something clean to get yourself a drink. She awkwardly introduces you to some people, without actually getting anyone’s name correct, and leaves you to sort out the rest of the evening on your own. That is until she needs someone to “hold her hair back” …then suddenly you’re the new best friend. You see yourself out after navigating more than one passed out partier. Wait…where’s your wallet?
Party #2 – You arrive…fashionably late because the elegant invitation that you received made you immediately consider your best manners. The door opens and the hostess greets you warmly. She takes your coat and hangs it in the coat closet. You are offered a beverage from a thoughtfully edited bar. You simply ask for “Ginger Ale” and she has it, of course…she made it herself. You’re handed your glass along with a custom-printed cocktail napkin marking the special occasion.
She takes you around the room introducing you to the various guests, offering you something to eat from the elegant buffet in the dining room, and then proceeding out onto the patio. She makes one last introduction to the person she’s been dying to have you meet, breaks the ice a bit between the two of you, and fades into the soundwaves of her perfectly procured playlist. When you leave she’s there to thank you and to give a little parting gift…a token of her appreciation that you came. And you’re glad you did.
This, my friends, is the very distinction that sets Melissa & Ruby Press apart. It isn’t just about the plugs, the deal-making, the press-getting, the schtick. This is about grace, elegance, and poise with a dash of savvy, compassion, and genuine interest in the people they are serving. It’s a fine cocktail indeed that is always gently stirred…but never shaken.
Go ahead…look around. Travel far and wide. You’ll just find yourself looking down, clicking your heels three times to have your Ruby wish come true. But don’t worry, my dear…you had your wish all along.
- Bradford Crowder aka “Uncle Beffy”, Owner/blogger. The Bedlam Of Beefy
My background includes working for 4+ years in the home department of Real Simple and then going on to be the home and lifestyle editor of Redbook. I’m currently a freelance writer and stylist. I also curate a daily blog called the Haystack Needle and my online shop is called Cabin 7. So I have experience as both an editor and a blogger. And I have to say, I’m consistently impressed with what this small-but-mighty firm called Ruby Press is able to make happen.
The more I’m in the business, the more I think what Melissa and Ruby Press do for their clients rivals what some of these large New York PR firms try to do with staffs that are ten times the size. It’s not surprising that Melissa gets it, because she was on the other side as a fashion editor before starting Ruby Press. That makes all the difference! She’s aware of the crazy deadlines, last-minute switches, and she understands how to pitch editors. That is no small feat — most publicists do not understand how to pitch. Just ask a magazine editor, or check our email inboxes for proof — I currently have an inbox so littered with spam email because those publicists never once looked at my site to get a sense of what I cover or my voice. At Redbook, I would get some ridiculous pitches for topics that were not even in my beat — and most pitches didn’t understand the tone of the magazine. I’m surprised at how many publicists don’t understand that’s it about quality contact — not quantity of contact — that gets your news heard. There is an incredible amount of laziness when it comes to PR. I know that sounds harsh, but if you ask any editor that’s been in the business a while, you’d find that most PR contact feels like noise jamming up your email and voicemail — and then there are a few gems like Ruby Press, that actually make your job so much easier. Because as an editor, writer, or blogger, you do need great content. You do want to hear what’s new and what’s exciting. It’s all in the way that info is communicated. Melissa gets that you probably don’t want to know everything about all her clients — so her team at Ruby Press tailors the info to you and knows what you’re looking for.
I also have been surprised that through the years, Ruby Press has remained one of the only West Coast PR firms that makes regular trips to New York to visit with magazine editors and show them what’s new with their clients. It’s all about connections. Following each meeting with Ruby Press, I always walk away with a story idea or product find or a reminder of something I want to write about. And I love the way Ruby Press handles their press previews. They pick an accessible location (and a cute boutique hotel) and outfit a room with their clients’ collections. It’s so easy and fun and intimate — you don’t have to go over-the-top with fancy styled events to get your clients to be noticed.
Finally, I think it’s phenomenal what Ruby Press has created with their blog. As a daily blogger, I can say it’s no small accomplishment to run a blog with regular quality content. I don’t know of any another PR firm doing a blog in the way Ruby Press does theirs. Melissa started the blog years ago before all the talk of “social media” that’s come up in the last year — and she was smart to make the blog authentic. It’s not a corporate blog just talking up their clients (they curate the blog to include limited posts about their clients that focus on important news). But rather, it’s a fantastic style blog capturing the fashion, home, and food finds that Melissa and her team are loving. It’s really smart and I think it has to be one of their best assets. Their blog has a solid following, and more importantly, big design and style bloggers follow the Ruby Press blog. The Ruby Press team is a part of the blog community like any other blogger, rather than a publicist. In that way, Melissa and her employees really understand how to pitch bloggers.
I don’t know how they find the time to do it all, but like I said, I’m always so impressed by Ruby Press. I’m not surprised that through this tough economy, Melissa has managed to keep a growing client roster of home, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle clients that all have a cool aesthetic you’re interested in finding out more about. And I have to say, meeting with Melissa and her team never feels like work — they both have approachable, fun spirits, and I’ve loved getting to know them over the years.
